Rwandan music sensation Bruce Itahiwacu, widely known as Bruce Melodie, has landed a lucrative deal to perform at the second edition of the Trace Awards in Zanzibar, Tanzania. The artist, who was not originally included in the event’s official lineup, secured a last-minute agreement worth $20,000 (over Rwf 28 million) to perform a single song at the prestigious awards ceremony on February 26.

A Last-Minute Opportunity

Bruce Melodie’s inclusion in the event came as a surprise to many, as his name was not initially listed among the performers. According to a reliable source close to the artist, the Tanzanian government extended the offer just a day before the event. The primary reason behind this exclusive invitation was his hit song Zanzibar, which he composed and performed in collaboration with Tanzanian Bongo Flava star Harmonize.

“The government of Tanzania reached out to us with an attractive proposal because Bruce Melodie had previously released Zanzibar, a song that highlights the beauty of the host city for this edition of the Trace Awards,” the source revealed.

Zanzibar premiered on May 14, 2023, and quickly gained popularity, particularly in Tanzania, making it a fitting choice for the event’s performance lineup.

A Historic Achievement

Bruce Melodie’s presence at the Trace Awards adds another milestone to his already impressive career. He made history as the first and only Rwandan artist to win a Trace Award, earning the title of Best Rwandan Artist at the inaugural edition of the awards in Rwanda in 2023.

This year’s event features a star-studded lineup of artists from across Africa and the diaspora, including Nigerian superstars Rema and Yemi Alade, Tanzanian icons Diamond Platnumz, Alikiba, and Zuchu, as well as Congolese legends Fally Ipupa, Innoss’B, and Gaz Mawete. South African Amapiano duo Titom & Yuppe, Kenyan artist Bien, and Senegalese singer Wally Seck are also set to perform.

The Growing Prestige of the Trace Awards

Following the resounding success of its inaugural edition in Rwanda in October 2023, which captivated over 500 million viewers globally, the Trace Awards continue to gain prominence in celebrating African music and culture. Organizers have announced that the 2025 edition will further spotlight Africa’s top artists and the rich cultural narratives that shape their work.

With Afro-centric music dominating global charts, this year’s awards will honor some of the biggest names in the industry, including Burna Boy, Davido, Tyla, Wizkid, Nomcebo, Didi B, Ayra Starr, and more.

Bruce Melodie’s last-minute addition to the Trace Awards lineup not only showcases his growing influence in the African music industry but also highlights the importance of strategic musical projects in securing high-profile opportunities. His song Zanzibar has not only resonated with audiences but has also opened doors to prestigious international stages, proving that music remains a powerful tool for cultural and economic success.
